Choosing How Your Chapter Ends
The ending preference tells the AI how to finish a chapter: pause, twist, full resolution, or an exact moment you describe. Learn what Natural flow, Open-Ended, Finish story, Cliffhanger and Custom ending do, and how to get a chapter to stop exactly where you want.
The ending preference tells the AI how to finish the chapter it is about to write: with a pause, a twist, a full resolution, or an exact moment you describe. You choose it in the story form, right under the Story Prompt field, next to the question How would you like the chapter to end?
The setting applies to the chapter you are generating now. Choose it again for every new chapter, and when you regenerate one.
How it works
The AI receives your Story Prompt as a list of events to write, in order. Your ending preference is added as a separate instruction that only describes the final lines of the chapter.
- Natural flow sends no ending instruction at all.
- Open-Ended, Finish story and Cliffhanger send a short, general instruction. The AI decides the exact last scene.
- Custom ending sends your own text as a required ending scenario. This is the only option that lets you name the exact final moment.
The options
1. Natural flow
Use this when: You described the whole chapter in your Story Prompt and the AI should stop where the events stop.
How it works:
No ending instruction is sent. The chapter ends after the last event of your Story Prompt, in whatever way fits the scene. This is the default.
Example behavior:
Your prompt ends with two old friends saying goodbye at a train station. The chapter ends at the station, usually with a short closing line.
2. Open-Ended
Use this when: You want the chapter to pause rather than finish, and you like a reflective final note.
How it works:
The AI ends on an emotional or reflective moment, leaves the last scene unresolved on purpose, or closes on an image or a line of dialogue that hints at several possible futures without choosing one.
Example behavior:
The train leaves, and the chapter ends on a thought about the words the two friends did not say.
This option invites reflection by design. If you do not want any closing thoughts, use Custom ending instead.
3. Finish story
Use this when: This is the last chapter of the story.
How it works:
The AI treats the chapter as the final one. It resolves the main plot lines and emotional arcs, ties back to earlier events and decisions, and ends with clear closure.
Example behavior:
The two friends decide to open the bookshop they always talked about. The chapter answers the questions raised in earlier chapters and ends with a sense that the story is complete.
For a slow wind-down after the climax, pair it with the Denouement or Epilogue chapter type.
4. Cliffhanger
Use this when: You plan to continue the story and want the reader to need the next chapter.
How it works:
The AI cuts the chapter at a moment of high tension, just before a key action, revelation or decision, or adds a twist in the final lines. The main conflict stays unresolved.
Example behavior:
Just as the train doors close, one friend sees a familiar face in the next carriage. The chapter ends there.
5. Custom ending
Use this when: You know exactly how the chapter should end, or you want to rule out a kind of ending.
How it works:
A text box opens under the options. Write up to 1,000 characters. The AI is told that the chapter must end with the scenario you wrote.
Example instruction:
End the chapter the moment Dana closes the door behind her. No closing paragraph.
Getting an exact ending
If the AI keeps adding a tender wrap-up, a summary of the evening, or thoughts about the future, the fix is Custom ending with a precise instruction.
- Select Custom ending.
- Describe the last moment as an action, not a mood. "Stop on the line where Marcus says: Not tonight." works better than "End abruptly."
- Add one short sentence about what to leave out, such as "No reflection and no thoughts about the future."
- Make the same moment the last event in your Story Prompt. The AI writes the events in order, so the ending you want should also be the last thing in your prompt.
Instructions that work well:
End the chapter the moment the elevator doors close. Do not add a closing paragraph.
The last line is Priya's text message: "I'm outside." Nothing after it.
Stop in the middle of the argument, with the question unanswered. No reflection and no thoughts about the future.
Two more settings help:
- Set the Creativity Setting to Conservative, so the AI adds less material of its own.
- If a chapter still runs a few lines too long, open it in Edit Mode, select the extra lines, and ask AI Edit to remove them.
Quick comparison
- Let the AI decide: Natural flow.
- A pause with a reflective note: Open-Ended.
- The story ends for good: Finish story.
- Suspense before the next chapter: Cliffhanger.
- One exact final moment: Custom ending.
Final tip
Start with Natural flow and a Story Prompt whose last event is the ending you want. Switch to Custom ending only when the AI keeps adding something you did not ask for. One clear sentence about the final moment usually fixes it.
